Cross Profiles

Cross profiles - also known as elevation profiles or terrain transects - are vertical slices of the terrain that show changes in elevation along a line across a landscape. They are fundamental tools in environmental analysis, geomorphology, hydrology, landscape design, and urban planning.

Cross profiles in QGIS

QGIS allows you to combine raster data (like elevation models), vector layers (like contour lines), and point clouds (such as LiDAR data) to generate highly informative profiles. With the right tools and plugins, you can visualize, compare, and extract insights from these profiles—at both site-specific and regional scales.

Download / select data

Download elevation data
  1. Access https://ahn.arcgisonline.nl/ahnviewer/ and click the Layer List button (fig.1)
  2. Check the AHN4 - Downloads per kaartblad layer
  3. Tiles with orange outlines will appear on the viewer. Click on the your study area tile to download the raster and point cloud files. The tile outline will turn turquoise, and a pop-up window will appear (fig.2).
  4. Download AHN4_DSM_5m, AHN4_DTM_5m and AHN4_Puntenwolk (LAZ). Laz files are quite large, so it will take a while to dowload them.
